As Italy is a launch member of the NZeTA programme, Italian citizens can now proceed with the online process for obtaining a New Zealand visa. This is a document required by Italian citizens for visits of up to 90 days. It is also recommended that passport validity be extended by at least three months from the expected departure date of all applicants.

How do I apply for an New Zealand eTA?

All Italian citizens, as well as eligible transit passengers, can easily obtain an eTA to New Zealand by completing an online application form, eliminating the need to visit an embassy as travellers are now provided with a quicker option that only takes minutes. However, most requests may take several business days to process. If your application is approved, your New Zealand ETA will be sent to the email address provided on your application form.

Do Italians need a visa for New Zealand?

Italy is a member of the Visa Waiver Program for New Zealand. Italians need a New Zealand eTA from Italy for travel up to 90 days, but no visa. NZeTA stands for New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority and serves as the official document of entry into New Zealand. The NZeTA is also mandatory for short trips to the country. Cruise passengers are also required to submit an eTA for each stay in New Zealand.

Italians who do not qualify for the NZeTA must apply for a New Zealand visa.

NZeTA validity

The New Zealand ETA can be used for multiple visits but is only valid for 2 years. Applicants must pay IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) and a small processing fee. IVL is a way for all travellers to give back or contribute to tourism infrastructure and help preserve and protect the environment they value while in New Zealand. The New Zealand visa for Italian nationals includes an online application form which can be completed in less than five (5) minutes. Italian passport requirements for NZeTA applications

  • The same passport must be used to apply for the NZeTA and travel from Italy to New Zealand. It is not possible to transfer NZ eTA from one passport to another.
  • This means that when an Italian passport expires, a new NZeTA application must be made, even if it has been less than 2 years since the original application.
  • The Italian passport used to apply for the NZeTA must be valid for at least 3 months after the date of departure of the traveller to New Zealand.
