Driving in and around Auckland — and everywhere in New Zealand — comes with a few rules that visitors should know. The most important is that New Zealand drives on the left-hand side of the road, and the driver sits on the right of the vehicle. If you are used to driving on the right, take extra care at intersections, roundabouts and when pulling out, especially in the first few days.
You can drive on a valid overseas licence for up to 12 months, but it must be in English or accompanied by an accredited translation or an International Driving Permit. Seat belts are compulsory for everyone, using a hand-held phone while driving is illegal, and speed limits (posted in kilometres per hour) are strictly enforced. Auckland traffic can be heavy at peak times, so allow extra time. Outside the city, roads are often narrow and winding, so drive to the conditions.
