The New Zealand eTA application is quick and easy to complete. Filling out the online form only takes a few minutes and you don't need to go to the embassy or consulate.

Are you going backpacking in New Zealand soon? Or are you on your way to Australia, for example? From 1st October 2019, it is compulsory to apply for an ETA for your journey to New Zealand. This is also known as a New Zealand visa (NZeTA). You can easily apply for the travel permit online and you will receive a message almost immediately whether you have been granted access to New Zealand. If sanctioned, your eTA for New Zealand is valid for two long years.

Emigration to New Zealand

New Zealand is a beautiful country at the end of the world. The island is inhabited by friendly Kiwis who will welcome you with open arms. The immigration process, on the other hand, is far less friendly. You must meet strict requirements to immigrate to New Zealand. Therefore, applying for a visa is not an easy process. We recommend that you arrange your visa before your stay so that you can start your emigration without any worries. Can't apply for a visa before you go? Then no need to panic. The Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) allows you to stay in New Zealand for up to three months. You can easily apply for one, but it's not the same as a valid visa. Good to know: With an NZeTA, you can stay in the country for a maximum of six months in any twelve-month period.

The requirements for the NZeTA are:

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you depart from New Zealand
  • You must have a return ticket
  • You can prove upon arrival that you have sufficient funds for your trip
  • You cannot be employed by a New Zealand employer
  • You should be healthy
  • You have no criminal record

Conditions for applying for an NZeTA

Your passport must have the validity of at least 6 months after you leave New Zealand. In addition to:

  • A visa isn't needed for your stays of up to 3 months.
  • NZeTA is mandatory.
  • The document is valid for 2 years as long as your passport is also valid during this period.
  • NZeTA approval processing time is a maximum of 3 working days (72 hours) excluding working days.

When should travellers file their NZeTA and pay IVL?

You must apply for the NZeTA well in advance of your trip to New Zealand. It can take up to 72 hours to process an NZeTA application. Starting July 2019, you can apply for your NZeTA and pay your IVL. If you do not have your NZeTA at check-in for your flight or cruise, you will not be allowed to board. You may be able to apply for a NZeTA upon check-in, but if Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is unable to process your request in a timely manner, or if your request is denied, you will not be allowed onboard.

Are there any travel requirements in New Zealand?

The maximum stay in New Zealand would be the duration of 3 months. And that your NZeTA will not allow you to work in New Zealand, whether paid or unpaid. Then it is better to apply for another visa.

In addition to your NZeTA, you must also meet the following conditions:

  • You must apply for your passport before applying for your NZeTA.
  • You can prove that you have sufficient finances. In other words, you can pay for your trip without working there.
  • They must not endanger public order.

Transit in New Zealand

If you are traveling through New Zealand to another international destination, you will not need proof of vaccination, but please check the entry requirements at your final destination to determine if you need a pre-departure test.

New Zealand Declaration of Travel (NZTD)

Passengers flying to New Zealand are not required to complete a New Zealand Passenger Declaration. If you have completed a travel declaration for travel after Thursday 20 October 2022, you will not need to present your passport on arrival in New Zealand.

The best time to travel to New Zealand

Very useful to know the weather forecast before you go. New Zealand really is on the other side of the world. This not only means 12 hours later in New Zealand (winter time), but also that the seasons are exactly the opposite of ours. So, you want to leave the dreary winter months behind? Then find summer on the other side of the world.

New Zealand's summer holidays run from mid-December to mid-January, making it the busiest and most expensive time to travel. If you just want to avoid the crowds and tourists like us, March to May is the best time.
