No, an NZeTA cannot be extended. It is issued for a fixed validity of up to 2 years and that period cannot be lengthened once the authority has been granted.
If your NZeTA is about to expire, or it will not cover the full length of your planned trip, the solution is to apply for a new NZeTA before you travel — you can do this at any time and hold more than one during a transition. Remember that the NZeTA only permits stays of up to 90 days per visit (6 months for UK citizens) and a maximum of 6 months in any 12-month period. If you need to remain in New Zealand for longer than the NZeTA allows, you should instead apply for an appropriate New Zealand visitor visa through Immigration New Zealand, which permits longer stays but requires more documentation.
