Do Malaysian travellers need a visa for New Zealand?

Malaysian citizens do not require a visa to travel to New Zealand for up to 90 days. Visa-free entree is allowed for business activities and tourism purposes. However, to enter the visa-free country, Malaysians must have an Electronic Travel Authorization. What are the visa requirements for New Zealand from Malaysia?

A New Zealand visa is required for Malaysian citizens for visits of up to 90 days. Malaysian passport holders can enter New Zealand through the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) for 90 days without obtaining a New Zealand visa from Malaysia under the Visa Waiver Scheme, which started in 2009. From July 2019, Malaysian citizens will need an eTA for New Zealand. A New Zealand visa from Malaysia is optional but a mandatory requirement for all Malaysian nationals traveling to the country for short stays. Before traveling to New Zealand, travellers should ensure that their passport is valid for at least three months after the expected date of departure. Only Australian citizens are exempt, even permanent residents of Australia must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authorization (NZeTA).

When checking in at the airport, you may also need to show the following:

  • Proof of sufficient funds (NZD1000 for each month you stay in the country or NZD400 per month if you can show that you have paid for the accommodation).
  • your return ticket.
  • As mentioned above, the NZ e-Visa is valid for 2 years from the date of issue. Within this period, short stays of up to 3 months (90 days) are possible. You can visit a maximum of 6 months in a 12-month period.

If you are a crew member on an airline or cruise ship, your NZeTA is valid for 5 years. Please note that the validity period of your travel authorization cannot be extended. If you want to spend more time here, you'll first need to leave the country, apply for a new NZeTA and then re-enter. Your E-Visa is valid until the expiration date or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

How long can a visitor with a Malaysian passport stay in New Zealand on an ETA?

Malaysian nationals with an ETA can stay in New Zealand for a maximum of 90 days upon the arrival. You should remember that all your visits must be strictly limited to tourist purposes.

How do I apply for an ETA for New Zealand?

Signing up for the New Zealand ETA is very easy. There are only three steps:

  • In the first step, you will be asked to enter your general information. You will also have to choose a processing time from the options above.
  • In the second step, you will be asked to review the first step and make a payment.
  • The final step consists of a questionnaire and uploading photos. At this stage, you need to upload the scanned passport. Other documents may be required, but this depends on individual circumstances.
