The currency used throughout New Zealand is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD), often written with the $ symbol and sometimes shown as NZ$ to distinguish it from other dollar currencies. Notes come in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100, and coins range from 10 cents to $2.
New Zealand is largely a cashless society, so you rarely need much physical money. Credit and debit cards — particularly Visa and Mastercard — are accepted almost everywhere, contactless (“PayWave”) payments are common, and ATMs are widely available in towns and cities. It is still handy to carry a small amount of cash for markets, small rural shops or tips. Your NZeTA fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) are paid online in advance when you apply, so you do not need New Zealand dollars for that part of your trip.
