FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
No. Qualifying for an NZeTA does not change a country's visa-waiver relationship with New Zealand, and it does not cause travellers to lose their visa-exempt status. Citizens of countries that previously enjoyed visa-free entry — including EU member states — still do; the NZeTA is simply an additional layer of advance authorisation, not a visa in the traditional sense.
The purpose of the NZeTA is to strengthen border management while keeping travel easy for genuine visitors. It supports better advance screening of passengers, uses modern technology to help counter serious crime such as identity fraud, keeps the whole process electronic and paperless, and helps reduce waiting times at passport control on arrival. In other words, it makes visa-waiver travel more secure without taking the waiver away. Eligible travellers can still apply online in minutes; see who qualifies on our eligible countries page.
