An NZeTA cannot be extended, so if you want to keep travelling on one after it expires you simply apply for a new NZeTA before the old one runs out. You can hold a fresh authority ready for your next trip — there is no waiting period.
Extending your stay within New Zealand is a different matter. The NZeTA only allows visits of up to 90 days (6 months for UK citizens) and a maximum of 6 months in any 12-month period, and those limits cannot be stretched. If you need to remain in the country for longer, you must apply for a New Zealand visitor visa through Immigration New Zealand, which permits longer stays but requires more documentation and takes longer to process.
