To be safe, we advise US travellers to apply at least three working days (72 hours) before departure. This margin means that even if your application takes a little longer than usual, it will still be approved before you need to board. Applying earlier carries no downside, since the NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years once granted. What you should avoid is applying at the last minute: without an approved NZeTA at check-in, the airline will not let you fly.
