You should apply for your NZeTA at least 72 hours (three working days) before you depart. Most applications are approved well within that window — frequently within a few hours — but allowing three days gives Immigration New Zealand time to complete any additional checks before you need to board.
Because the NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years, there is no disadvantage to applying earlier; many travellers do so as soon as their trip is decided. Leaving the application to the last minute, on the other hand, is risky: if approval is delayed and you do not have an NZeTA at check-in, the airline or cruise line will not let you board. To stay on the safe side, apply online as soon as your dates are set, and monitor progress on our visa status page.
