You cannot enter New Zealand at all without the correct travel authority, so for visa-waiver travellers there is no such thing as staying “without an NZeTA” — you need one simply to board. What people usually mean is: how long can you stay on the NZeTA itself?
The answer is up to 90 days per visit for most nationalities, and up to 6 months per visit for British citizens, with an overall cap of 6 months in any 12-month period. New Zealand and Australian citizens, and existing New Zealand visa holders, are the only travellers who do not need an NZeTA. If you want to remain longer than the NZeTA permits, you must apply for a visitor visa instead. To secure your authority in good time, apply for your NZeTA before you travel.
